The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has launched a new national learning programme, developed in collaboration with Idorsia Pharmaceuticals UK Ltd, to support pharmacists in identifying and managing patients with insomnia. 
 
Designed for pharmacists across both primary and secondary care, this programme explores the full spectrum of insomnia - from acute to chronic - and its impact on co-morbidities such as mental health conditions and chronic pain.
 
Through a dynamic blended learning approach, you'll gain access to live webinars, insightful podcasts, and interactive e-learning modules that will deepen your understanding and enhance your clinical practice in managing insomnia.

Speaker:

Dr Adam Pattison Rathbone - Lecturer in Clinical and Social Pharmacy at Newcastle University and Honorary Pharmacist at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Adam is an advanced clinical pharmacist specialising in adult and paediatric sleep medicine. Adam's clinical practice, research and teaching focus on the social and clinical aspects of using medicines within everyday life, utilising behavioural science and qualitative research to understand the nuances of safe and effective medicines use.

Rest well: Understanding sleep hygiene and wellbeing

Wednesday 15 October 2025 | 7.00pm - 8.00pm

 

In this first session, we'll explore the fundamentals of sleep hygiene - examining how lifestyle factors influence sleep quality and reviewing evidence-based strategies for maintaining healthy sleep patterns. You'll gain the confidence to recognise insomnia symptoms, have meaningful patient conversations, and support a more integrated approach to care.

The learning objectives are:

  • Summarise the principles of sleep hygiene
  • Identify what is good sleep versus poor sleep
  • Explain the role of lifestyle factors in sleep health
  • Identify strategies to promote and maintain overall sleep wellbeing

Sleepless nights: Understanding insomnia and its impact on health

Wednesday 19 November 2025 | 7.00pm - 8.00pm

 

In this second session, we'll be taking a deeper dive into insomnia - exploring its prevalence, contributing factors, and health implications. We will also focus on the pharmacist's essential role in identifying, managing and educating patients about the condition, equipping you with practical tools to support patient care effectively.

The learning objectives are:

  • Describe the causes and different forms of insomnia
  • Discuss the physical and mental health impact of insomnia
  • Reflect on the role of pharmacists in different settings in identifying and managing insomnia
