We’re bringing pharmacy, medical and nursing professionals together for a series of multidisciplinary educational webinars focusing on the safer use of medicines.

Developed and delivered in collaboration with Royal College of Physicians (RCP), Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), Royal College of Nursing (RCN), Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) the series will focus on human factors.

By sharing expertise and best practice between professions, the series aims to promote a multidisciplinary approach to medication safety and continuously improve the systems you work in.

What are human factors?

It is estimated that 237 million medication errors occur in the NHS in England every year (CQC, 2022). Therefore, it is a priority to reduce medication-related harm.  The World Health Organisation (WHO) launched their third global patient safety challenge – ‘Medication Without Harm’ which aims to reduce severe avoidable medication-related harm by 50% in 5 years (WHO, 2017).

With pressure on healthcare growing, clinical and medication errors are more likely to occur, often, not due to one specific factor. It is vital that we design healthcare systems to make it easy to do the right thing and hard to do the wrong thing, which is where Human Factors comes in.

The term ‘Human Factors’ relates to the individual, organisational and environmental factors that influence our behaviours and actions. By better understanding what Human Factors are, you can play a vital role in building robust systems and processes to minimise risk to patients and improve quality of care.

Together we will learn from real life examples to help you relate human factors to your day to day practice, understand when interventions should be implemented, and be equipped with practical tools and solutions you can use in your practice to improve medication and patient safety.
